What to expect

This 13-day journey combines five Chinese cities: Beijing, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing and Shanghai. Beginning in Beijing and ending in Shanghai, it takes in the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, Xi'an's Terracotta Army and a panda conservation and research centre, before exploring Chongqing and Shanghai. Several intercity journeys are by high-speed train; the Chongqing-to-Shanghai leg is a scheduled flight.

Itinerary

Day 1 | Arrival in Beijing: Airport reception, hotel transfer and free time. Stay at the four-star Holiday Inn Temple of Heaven Beijing or similar.

Day 2 | Beijing: Visit the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall with return cable car rides, a photo stop outside the Bird's Nest Stadium, the Summer Palace and Wangfujing Street. Breakfast included.

Day 3 | Beijing: Visit Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, historic Nanluoguxiang and the Temple of Heaven. A Peking roast duck dinner is included. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 4 | Beijing to Xi'an: Approximately five hours by high-speed train. Reception at Xi'an station, hotel transfer and free time. Stay at the four-star Holiday Inn Express Xi'an Ancient Town West or similar. Breakfast included.

Day 5 | Xi'an: Visit the Terracotta Army and Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Tang Dynasty show and dumpling banquet are optional. Breakfast included.

Day 6 | Xi'an: Cycle or walk on the ancient city walls; visit the Great Mosque, Muslim Quarter, Bell Tower and Drum Tower Square. Breakfast and local lunch included.

Day 7 | Xi'an to Chengdu: Approximately four hours by high-speed train, followed by a walk along historic Jinli Street. Stay at the four-star Park Inn by Radisson Chengdu Wuhou Shrine or similar. Breakfast included.

Day 8 | Chengdu: Visit the giant panda research centre and panda museum, Jinsha Site Museum and People's Park; watch Sichuan opera's face-changing performance. Breakfast and Sichuan-style dinner included.

Day 9 | Chengdu to Chongqing: Travel by high-speed train and visit historic Ciqikou. Stay at the four-star Holiday Inn Express Chongqing Guanyinqiao or similar. Breakfast included.

Day 10 | Chongqing: Visit Hongya Cave, downtown Jiefangbei and the city's night views. A Chongqing hotpot dinner is included. Breakfast and dinner included.

Day 11 | Chongqing to Shanghai: Airport transfer and flight to Shanghai. After check-in, explore Nanjing Road. Stay at the four-star Holiday Inn Express Shanghai Jinsha or similar. Breakfast included.

Day 12 | Shanghai: Visit Yu Garden, Yuyuan Bazaar, the Jade Buddha Temple and the Bund. A Huangpu River cruise is optional. Breakfast and Shanghai-style dinner included.

Day 13 | Departure from Shanghai: Breakfast, check-out by 12:00 and airport transfer for the return journey.
